Read Erle Stanley Gardner sometime. He writes a damn good story. My only thing that hurts my brain is he comes from the school of 'put as many characters as possible in your story as possible'
i think a central detective figure is a good way to go. Mysteries are hard, but a curious protagonist never hurts.
